What color are the collective shadows of the groups you Interact with?
“Birds of a feather flock together.” Individuals usually flock together in groups that share the same feathers—similar beliefs, values and blind spots. These collective belief systems and blind spots can be studied and categorized using the same stages of development. This enables us to develop powerful new ways of looking at and understanding group inter-dynamics that explain many of the culture-wars that can’t be understood with current, less complete ways of thinking.

Shadow Webinar Level 3 - State Shadows
Various instructors
In order to begin to see even the possibility of State Shadows, we will need to do some preparatory work.
We will begin with a simple Zen perspective of three states of consciousness: Gross, Subtle and Causal, which includes an allusion to a mysterious “other shore.” From this perspective physical, things are objects of the gross realm. The absence of things, a direct experience of nothing or timeless nothingness is the causal realm. And, everything arising in experience between the gross physical realm and the timeless causal realm is arising in the subtle realm. We will then ground this perspective with some “wu” technologies or “nothingness” technologies. Here, we use language and transmission to lead to a taste of a direct experience of timeless emptiness. We then must add shared language to clearly articulate our experiences in words and sentences. By including both shared experiences and shared articulation of the experiences, we build a solid foundation of both common experience and language.

Using the wisdom of Buddhism, Depth Psychology and Integral Theory, we further our exploration of the territory of states by examining state shadows, what Wilber describes in The Religions of Tomorrow, where he says: “Shadows are addictions and allergies in States and Stages, and what drives them.”

Various instructors
In this series of webinars, we lay out this whole spectrum of shadows as a wholistic context. Anything less seems to lead to misunderstanding and confusion. We begin with the karma that we inherit when we’re born as a human being. Then, we can move on to something that's a little closer to home, our family karma. When I'm working with a group, I always ask how many of you come from a family that has some seriously messed up family karma? Almost everyone raises their hand. After karma we move into preverbal, developmental and shock trauma, as well as the early childhood issues that are illuminated by attachment theory and parental bonding patterns. Then we begin to explore the subpersonalities that are split off and disowned in light of the capacities that are trying to emerge and stabilize at each specific level of ego development.
